"Ubu Imperator" delves deeply into themes of absurdity, instability, and the critique of power. At its core, the artwork reflects the Dada movement's rejection of rationality and traditional norms. The central red, anthropomorphic figure, reminiscent of Alfred Jarry’s character 'Ubu', merges regal and grotesque elements, suggesting a distorted vision of authority.
One prominent theme is the absurdity of power. The figure's body, shaped like a spinning top, symbolizes the instability and capricious nature of dominion. This notion is further emphasized by the comical yet unsettling features of the figure—a circular head with eye slits and a beak-like nose—highlighting the irrational and grotesque aspects of authoritarianism.
Surrealism and disquiet also permeate the piece. The desolate desert landscape under a turbulent sky enhances the dream-like, unsettling quality of the scene. The exaggerated shadow cast by the central figure adds to the eerie atmosphere, questioning the reality and permanence of power.
Dominion and authority are reinforced by the slender scepter in the figure’s hand, blending regality with absurdity. This is in line with the Dadaist critique of societal structures and post-war disillusionment. Thus, through "Ubu Imperator", Ernst explores how power can be both grotesque and unstable, reflecting the chaotic spirit of his time.
