Friedrich Boser

Karl Friedrich Adolf Boser, also Carl Friedrich Adolf Boser (born November 13, 1809 in Halbau, Kingdom of Saxony; † January 28, 1881 in Düsseldorf), was a German genre and portrait painter of the Düsseldorf School.

Life

Boser first attended the academies in Dresden (1826–1832) and Berlin (1834–1836). In 1837/1838 he attended the 2nd class of history painting at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. From 1841 to 1843 he studied genre and portrait painting there, which was his primary focus from then on. From 1848 to 1881 he was a member of the Malkasten artists' association. He developed closer friendships with the Düsseldorf landscape painters Andreas Achenbach and Carl Friedrich Lessing. Boser took part in various exhibitions. His paintings were awarded a prize medal in London in 1863 and bronze medals in 1871 and 1872. Many of his pictures found their way to the United States, where an obituary in 1881 listed him as one of the well-known German genre painters. In the mid-1840s, the painter Wilhelm Camphausen portrayed Friedrich Boser in his studio on an engraving.

Work (selection)

As early as 1843, Boser was recognized as an important genre and portrait painter of the Düsseldorf School. Boser attached great importance to fine painting and a detailed design of the subjects. He also dabbled in literary material. His friendship galleries and the pictures that captured excerpts from the social life of the Düsseldorf painting school are of particular art historical importance. In Boser's friendship galleries, the person portrayed was included in a ritual in which he authenticated his friendship with his signature and a dedication.
